Recently I had the opportunity to work on a vintage MSA Supersustain II pedal steel guitar.
It needed a minor repair to a knee lever and adjusting some of the other levers. I never played one of these before and it was a nice steel guitar. I was curious as to how the Supersustain pickup sounded. Surprisingly the guitar sounded very similar to my MSA Classic pedal steel guitar. I’m not sure if it was because it has wood necks similar to the MSA Classic or maybe because the changer is the same. Most likely it’s a combination of things and also they are both MSAs.
This guitar was interesting because the color was very sun faded. It was originally blue but faded into a very nice brown color. The front is brown and the back of the guitar is blue and brown. The underside is blue showing the original color.
If you get a chance to play a vintage MSA pedal steel, do it! I think these guitars get overshadowed by the new MSAs which cost many thousands more. Also, many times people shy away from them because of their weight. Yes, vintage MSA pedal steel guitars are heavy but I think people tend to exaggerate how heavy they are in relation to other steel guitars of the era. Because of this, many times you can find vintage MSA steel guitars for good prices.
